JORGE L. ARRIZURIETA APPOINTED BY THE PRESIDENT
AS A MEMBER OF THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE
FOR TRADE POLICY AND NEGOTIATIONS
Second Presidential Appointment in the Current Administration for Arrizurieta
MIAMI – September 21, 2007 - Jorge L. Arrizurieta, Chair of the International Policy Group for the law firm Akerman Senterfitt, was appointed by President Bush as a member of the Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations, for a four-year term. The Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations is the U.S. government's senior trade advisory panel, established to provide the U.S. Trade Representative with policy advice on matters concerning objectives and bargaining positions of proposed trade agreements, the implementation of trade agreements once they are in force, and other matters arising in connection with the trade policy of the United States.
"I am proud to be joining the President's administration and to help advise him on issues of our nation's trade relations with Latin America," Arrizurieta said.
The appointment comes on the heels of Arrizurieta's appointment earlier this year to Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney's Latin American Policy Advisory Group, which is also focused on issues vital to the country's relations with Latin America. Arrizurieta is also the current Chairman of the Miami Host Committee for the 2008 Annual Meeting of the Inter-American Development Bank, taking place in Miami April 4-8, 2008.
In 2003, Governor Jeb Bush named Arrizurieta chief executive of the Florida Free Trade Area of the Americas Inc. (FTAA), where he developed and implemented strategies for securing Miami as the site of the Permanent Secretariat of the FTAA. In this role, Arrizurieta served as the lead spokesperson and liaison for the Florida FTAA's Board of Directors and successfully raised substantial funds in support of the organization's goals. Previously, he was nominated by President George W. Bush and confirmed to serve as the 10th U.S. Alternate Executive Director of the Inter-American Development Bank. He has also served as U.S. Alternate Executive Director of the Inter-American Investment Corporation and represented the U.S. on the Multilateral Investment Fund's Donors Committee. Arrizurieta is a founding member of the Interamerican Ethanol Commission, an organization created to foster awareness of the benefits of renewable fuels to economies throughout the Americas. He is also a member of Governor Romney's Florida Statewide Finance Committee.
